The City of Montréal is divided into electoral districts. Candidates for the office of councillor submit their nomination for their chosen electoral district.
The general electoral process determines the electoral districts and the composition of the city council and each of the 19 borough councils.

On November 6 and 7, 2021, voters elected the mayor of Montréal (who is also the mayor of the Ville-Marie borough), the borough mayors, the city councillors and the borough councillors.
